Surveillance Panopticon Issues

Number of Pages 9

The essay discussed three distinct topics. The first topic discussed Foucault’s report on the Panopticon, a surveillance machine used initially in prisons. The benefits of this machine were discussed and explained. The essay moved into the amount of surveillance of Americans is happening today, the increased authority of law enforcement and intelligence agencies in terms of surveillance, and the Patriot Act. The second part of the paper discussed Foucault’s ideas about power, biopower and sovereign power. The paper explained what biopower is and the kinds of power that we should be looking for. The paper then gave an example of sovereign power in terms of China’s one-child policy, its results, and other consequences. There are eight sources listed in the bibliography of this nine page paper.
