Street Corner Society: The Social Structure of an Italian Slum was William Foote Whyte's introduction of the technique of participant observation. Since its publication in 1943, it has become a textbook for the science. This paper analyzes this methodology, and in particular the effect the book and methods have had on sociology and the participants involved.
