The student's experience at Mary Crest was both eye-opening and heartbreaking at the same time, inasmuch as these once-vibrant people who were capable of living on their own and taking care of themselves have been stripped of their individuality, independence and any meaningful connection with the outside world. While some of the residents enjoyed and looked forward to conversing with the student, the others who chose to remain sequestered from such visitation had apparently pulled into themselves out of what can only be a reaction to losing their freedom.
