Oedipus Rex & Darker Face of the Earth

Number of Pages 5

A 5 page essay that discusses Rita Dove’s 1994 play “The Darker Face of the Earth,” which mirrors many of the themes and plot devices that occur in ancient Greek play by Sophocles’ “Oedipus Rex.” In both plays, the work of fate and destiny are evident in a manner that suggests that while the protagonists in both works are the victims of these forces, they are also agents of freewill. The fate of each man evolves with his own personal behavior and largely from the way in which he rejects the aspects the moral standards of his culture. As this suggests, even though Oedipus and Augustus are born into circumstances that are beyond their control, situations that were created by their parents, each man has freewill and the choices he makes are instrumental in bringing about his fate. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
